What does it take to build confidence, develop leadership skills, and prepare students for success beyond the classroom? This week on The Pulse, we’re visiting with the instructors and cadets of Palatka Junior-Senior High School’s JROTC program to learn how they’re doing just that. From the physically demanding Raider Challenge to competitive air rifle and archery teams, students are developing discipline, perseverance, teamwork, patience, and the seven Army values. Cadets also take on leadership positions, learning how to communicate, guide their peers, solve problems, and lead by example. But the vision doesn’t stop there! Our guests also share an exciting proposal to develop an indoor air rifle and archery range that could become a North Florida center of excellence for marksmanship, while providing a multipurpose facility for students, athletic teams, and the community. Join us as we discover how JROTC is shaping tomorrow’s leaders and how community support could help make an exciting vision a reality!

Change a Life — Be a Mentor! Reach One, Teach One is a mentoring program that makes a difference by providing students with guidance, encouragement, and accountability. Mentors typically meet with students once a week to help them set goals, discuss academic progress, and support their personal growth. These consistent, supportive relationships help students stay on track academically, build confidence, and grow emotionally. You can make a difference! Mentors can choose to work with either elementary or high school students. Interested in becoming a mentor? Contact Justin Campbell at jcampbell@my.putnamschools.org. Mentors will be asked to complete an application and undergo a background check. Students interested in participating should contact their school guidance counselor for more information. One person. On this episode of The Pulse, Superintendent Rick Surrency welcomes the sponsor and student leaders of Q.I. Roberts Jr./Sr. High School’s Mental Health Ambassadors. This 33-member student organization is dedicated to breaking the stigma surrounding mental health, supporting peers, and connecting students with school and community resources. The students discuss the pressures of academic achievement, challenges students may face behind closed doors, and the importance of creating a safe, supportive environment where everyone feels heard. They also share plans for Challenge Day, an initiative designed to break down social barriers and encourage meaningful connections among students. From overcoming the fear of failure to reminding boys that it’s okay to express their feelings, these ambassadors demonstrate the power of peer support and compassion. Their message is simple but powerful: You are not alone, it’s okay not to be okay, and someone is willing to listen. The QI Junior-Senior High School marching band joins The PCSD Pulse to share how music builds confidence, leadership, teamwork and community connections. Director Randy Doo and student musicians discuss the band’s growth, competitive success, community performances and the opportunities available to students beginning in seventh grade. Hear how the band is making an impact both on the field and throughout Putnam County.

October is Anti-Bullying Month, and this episode of The PCSD Pulse focuses on an important message for students, families, and school staff: everyone has a role to play in creating a safe and supportive school environment. Putnam County School District Superintendent Dr. Rick Surrency is joined by members of the district’s mental health department, Sandy Hurst and Hannah Silcox to discuss what bullying really looks like, how it is defined under Florida law, and why recognizing the difference between a one-time conflict and a pattern of bullying behavior matters. The conversation explores the three groups involved in bullying situations — the student being bullied, the student engaging in bullying behavior, and the bystander. Guests emphasize the importance of turning bystanders into “upstanders” who have the courage to report what they see, support a fellow student, and seek help from a trusted adult. The discussion also addresses cyberbullying and the challenges created by social media. Because online harassment can continue beyond the school day, students may feel as though there is no escape. Parents and caregivers are encouraged to pay attention to changes in their children’s behavior and to be actively involved in their children’s online experiences.

The impact of cell phone bans in schools, social media effects on youth mental health, and what parents and educators need to know. He shares data-driven insights and challenges common assumptions about technology and student well-being.

Agriculture is about much more than farming—and students at Q.I. Roberts Junior-Senior High School are discovering just how many opportunities exist within the field. On this episode of The Pulse, we hear from agriculture teacher Ms. Rogers and five FFA students about their experiences in FFA, 4-H, livestock shows, hydroponics, and the new AICE Agriculture course. Students share how agriculture has helped them build confidence, develop leadership skills, explore careers, and prepare for life after high school. They also discuss hands-on projects, including growing lettuce through hydroponics and bringing that harvest to the school cafeteria. The conversation also explores the future of agriculture, from sustainability and food production to technology, precision irrigation, and artificial intelligence. These students are learning that agriculture isn’t simply about where our food comes from—it’s about innovation, science, leadership, and preparing to feed future generations.

Putnam County Schools is celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month with its sixth annual Hispanic Heritage celebration! In this episode of The Pulse, Superintendent Rick Surrency is joined by educators and students to talk about the history of this growing tradition and what makes this year’s celebration special. From traditional dances, music and cultural displays to piñatas, soccer, traditional clothing and authentic foods, students and families will have an opportunity to learn, celebrate and experience the rich diversity of Hispanic cultures. This year’s theme, “Unidos Somos Más,” or “Together We Are More,” captures the spirit of bringing people together through understanding and appreciation.
